There are over 300 Premarin farms operating in the US and Canada and most are located in Alberta, Manitoba and Saskatchewan but only one US company has the patent to produce this drug, that being Wyeth Inc. There are millions of women taking this drug for hormone replacement therapy.  Premarin is produced from conjugated estrogens obtained from the urine of pregnant mares. This drug is put out in many forms (pills, creams injections, patches, vaginal rings) and is used to reduce the symptoms of menopause in women or women who have had a hysterectomy. It’s also prescribed to  eliminate the risk of osteoporosis and heart disease in women over 50.  However I’m sure if most women knew where it came from and how it was produced they wouldn’t touch it. Especially since there is a synthetic drug and an organic one found in plants that does the same thing. There has also been some studies done on Premarin over the last few years and there is very strong evidence that it may increase the risk of breast cancer. There are other side effects that women should be aware of too such as blood clots, uterine bleeding, uterine fibroids (fibroid tumors), weight gain, mental depression, edema, changes in libido and gallbladder disease. It would seem logical to most of us that there would be issues with infusing another species estrogens into the body. I’m sure that there are many more risks and effects that will continue to surface as future studies continue.

On further observation we are also subjected to the pain and torment and the barbaric conditions suffered by the animals that are used to produce this drug and the by-product of course being unwanted foals. There is no market for these babies in the pleasure sector so they are shipped by the thousands to slaughterhouses to be fattened up for overseas meat markets in France, Belgium and Asia.

As women we can stay informed and educate other women as to the barbaric procedures used in the production of the drug Premarin and the additional health risks involved for those who use it. You can visit any of the following links: Premarin.org, horseaid.com, animalsvoice.com, lcanimal.org, and liveandletlivefarm.org for further information and ways in which you can contribute to the awareness of the dangers of the use of this drug or the animal abuse that is part of it’s production. You should be warned that some of the material on these sights is quite graphic and may be disturbing to some.

We as women need to make a collective choice not to use this drug. Women can and will survive without Premarin.
